The Unexpected Ways Video Games Are Shaping Modern Art

Video games have moved far beyond the arcade cabinets and pixelated screens of their early days. What was once dismissed as mere entertainment for teenagers has evolved into a sophisticated art form that increasingly influences traditional artistic disciplines. Museums around the world now feature video game exhibitions, prestigious art institutions collect game design elements, and contemporary artists incorporate gaming aesthetics and mechanics into their work.

This cross-pollination between video games and fine art represents one of the most fascinating cultural developments of the 21st century. The boundary between these once-separate worlds continues to blur, creating new possibilities for artistic expression and challenging long-held notions about what constitutes “legitimate” art.

The Digital Canvas and Museum Walls

The Museum of Modern Art in New York added 14 video games to its permanent collection in 2012, including classics like Pac-Man and Tetris. This wasn’t just a nod to nostalgia or pop culture it was recognition of video games as a design medium worthy of serious artistic consideration.

“We’re very interested in the interaction design, in the elegance of the code,” said Paola Antonelli, senior curator of architecture and design at MoMA, explaining the acquisition. This perspective frames games not just as entertainment products but as interactive design objects that combine visual art, narrative, music, and user experience.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum’s 2012 exhibition “The Art of Video Games” attracted over 680,000 visitors, demonstrating public interest in exploring games as artistic works. Similar exhibitions have appeared at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul.

I attended the V&A’s “Videogames: Design/Play/Disrupt” exhibition back in 2018, and what struck me wasn’t just the technical displays of how games are made, but how they connected to broader artistic movements. Walking through rooms displaying concept art from Journey alongside installations showing player-created narratives in Minecraft made me rethink my own assumptions about the boundaries between different creative media.

Game designers themselves increasingly view their work through an artistic lens. Hideo Kojima, creator of the Metal Gear series, once noted: “I believe that games are moving images that you can manipulate freely, that they’re art, and that they’re capable of affecting human emotions.” This artistic self-awareness has led to games that deliberately push boundaries and explore new aesthetic territories.

Artistic Techniques and Aesthetics Born in Virtual Worlds

Traditional artists have begun adopting techniques, aesthetics, and themes from video games in fascinating ways. Painter Jen Stark creates hypnotic, colorful works that seem directly inspired by the visual language of games like Katamari Damacy. Sculptor Tim Berresheim uses 3D modeling software similar to game development tools to create physical installations that blur the line between virtual and physical space.

The pixel art aesthetic born of technical limitations in early video games has become a legitimate artistic style embraced by contemporary artists. KAWS, whose work sells for millions at auction, creates figures that echo the blocky characters of early gaming. Street artist Invader places mosaic tile works resembling Space Invaders characters in urban environments worldwide, creating a dialogue between digital nostalgia and physical space.

Video game environments have pioneered new approaches to landscape art. Games like Firewatch and The Witness feature stylized natural settings that influence contemporary painters and photographers. The dramatic lighting and atmospheric effects in games like Red Dead Redemption 2 parallel developments in cinematic photography and landscape painting.

“I’m fascinated by how video games create these impossible spaces that still feel emotionally real,” says digital artist Rachel Rossin, whose VR installations draw directly from gaming aesthetics. “They’ve given us new ways to think about perspective and immersion.”

Color palettes from games have infiltrated graphic design, fashion, and architecture. The neon-soaked cyberpunk aesthetics of games like Cyberpunk 2077 appear in contemporary fashion collections, while the minimalist design of Monument Valley has influenced architectural visualization.

Game engines themselves have become artistic tools. Artists like Lawrence Lek create speculative architectural projects using Unreal Engine the same software powering games like Fortnite. These works exist in a space between architectural proposal, virtual environment, and interactive art.

Beyond Visual Art

The influence of video games extends beyond visual arts into music, literature, and performance. Composers like Austin Wintory, who created the Grammy-nominated score for Journey, move fluidly between writing music for games, films, and concert halls. The procedurally generated soundscapes of No Man’s Sky have influenced experimental electronic musicians seeking new approaches to composition.

Video game narratives have transformed storytelling approaches in other media. The branching storylines of games like Detroit: Become Human and The Stanley Parable have inspired experimental fiction writers to explore non-linear narratives. The immersive worldbuilding techniques developed for massive game universes like The Elder Scrolls have influenced how fantasy and science fiction authors construct their literary worlds.

Performance artists increasingly incorporate game mechanics and interactivity into their work. Marina Abramović, known for her groundbreaking performance pieces, has explored VR as an artistic medium. “Video games have trained a generation to think about bodies and spaces differently,” she noted in a recent interview. “They’ve created new possibilities for participation and presence.”

Dance companies have staged performances based on video game movements and aesthetics. The French choreographer Mourad Merzouki created Pixel, a dance performance where dancers interact with digital projections inspired by video game environments. The piece explores how virtual spaces affect physical movement and human expression.

I went to a small experimental theater production last year where audience members used smartphone apps to collectively influence the direction of the performance a direct borrowing from interactive game design. What fascinated me wasn’t just the technology but how naturally the audience adapted to this participatory role, suggesting how deeply game-thinking has penetrated our cultural expectations.

Video games have even influenced architecture and urban design. Architects increasingly use game engines to visualize projects and explore how people might navigate spaces. Urban planners study how games like SimCity model complex systems and apply these insights to real-world challenges.

This cross-disciplinary influence works both ways. Video games increasingly incorporate fine art references and techniques. Games like Bioshock draw on Art Deco aesthetics, while Assassin’s Creed meticulously recreates historical architectural styles. The critically acclaimed Disco Elysium features oil painting-inspired visuals that wouldn’t look out of place in a contemporary art gallery.

The relationship between video games and traditional art forms continues to evolve in unexpected ways. As gaming technology advances and artistic ambitions grow, we can expect even more surprising collaborations and innovations. Museums and galleries increasingly recognize games not just as cultural artifacts but as artworks worthy of critical engagement and preservation.

What makes this relationship particularly exciting is its democratic nature. Unlike some traditional art forms that can feel exclusionary, video games reach massive global audiences. When artistic techniques flow between games and traditional media, they potentially introduce new audiences to artistic concepts and aesthetic experiences they might otherwise never encounter.

The conversation about whether video games qualify as “art” now feels outdated. The more interesting question is how this relatively young medium continues to transform our understanding of what art can be and do. By combining visual design, narrative, music, and interactivity, games offer unique possibilities for artistic expression that no previous medium could provide.

As barriers between creative disciplines continue to fall, the unexpected ways video games shape modern art represent not just a passing trend but a fundamental shift in our cultural landscape. The artists, designers, and creators navigating this new territory are redefining artistic practice for the digital age, creating works that speak to both our virtual and physical realities.
